I'm committed to ending the era of political complacency in our electorate. I support a more progressive approach that prioritizes the interests of our community over corporate agendas. That’s why I signed up with our fantastic, supportive, and friendly volunteer team working with Sophie Scamps. I love collaborating with like-minded individuals who share a passion for positive change and community empowerment.
I see Sophie Scamps as a beacon of progressive values and am committed to challenging the rise of right-wing ideologies in Australian politics. I appreciate Sophie's support for innovation and real action on climate change, prioritizing sustainability and environmental stewardship. Above all, being part of this vibrant movement is incredibly rewarding!
My name is Jess and I am part of the youth team for Dr Sophie. I have a strong passion for advocating for young people and making sure we are part of the conversations affecting our future. I am currently studying a Media and Communications degree majoring in PR and Social Media and have already gained so much experience helping to grow the social media reach to young people on the Northern Beaches.
Dr Sophie has created a space where young people can feel heard and supported in their community which is a great space to be a part of. My goals working with the Mackellar team is to help inform and educate other young people on what is affecting them and what is going to affect them, as well as representing our voices in an important space. I am motivated by the positive changes Dr Sophie has brought to Mackellor and her commitment to doing what benefits people of all ages in our community.
I never used to pay much attention to politics, but the emergence of community Independents sparked a keen interest and I have realised how a good democracy should be more than just voting in an election – our voices should be heard in between elections too.
In my view, we have found in Sophie an authentic, compassionate, intelligent and courageous MP, who genuinely seeks to serve our community. Finally, I feel we now have a voice in Canberra and a MP who is not afraid to tackle the difficult issues. I’m inspired by Sophie’s unrelenting hard work and dedication to Mackellar, her collaborative style and her efforts to improve our democracy. I love to support Sophie and her team where I can and my involvement ranges from helping to keep volunteers connected to any ad hoc activity where a call for volunteers is put out.
Before the election I had met our incumbent Liberal MP and was very unimpressed by his glib assurances that the party was listening to concerns about the Climate and our need to migrate to renewables. A career party politician who was minding his patch but would not cross the floor for his constituents.
I signed up as a "teal volunteer" after hearing Sophie articulate her strong independent message at her official standing for parliament event.
Her progressive platform for action on climate change, improved health service, political integrity, equality and inclusivity resonates with my views.
Conversations with Sophie reveal her warmth and genuine concern, convincing me she is a rare authentic individual. A really nice person who is motivated to truly represent the local community, not just another "career politician".
During the Campaign, I lead the Doorknocking Team and enjoyed the camaraderie and shared purpose of knocking on as many doors as possible in the electorate. Hard work, but the challenges were totally outweighed by so many positive powerful conversations with members of the public who wanted change. I really was motivated by the journey of taking volunteers who had never doorknocked before, and watch them develop to become skilled brave communicators.
Sophie on her election to being the MP for Mackellar has exceeded my expectations with her superhuman efforts and commitment to change the status quo. She has worked deftly with her Teal and Independent colleagues to keep the Government checked.
I hope she stands for re-election to continue the journey of change in how we do politics in Mackellar, representing the community not a party.
My name is Sonia and I volunteer for Sophie, managing her business engagement. I help write the business newsletter, work in the office and also out and about visiting business networking groups as well business door knocking. My primary role is to raise awareness of the many government services available to small business and how Sophie, as the federal member can help. I use my corporate skills to give back to the community.
For many years I took very little interest in politics, too busy caught up in my career and family. But as a long time liberal voter I gradually became frustrated at the lack of integrity in politics. I started looking at the funding of political parties and the roles that politicians took on with many of their donors straight after resigning. When oil and gas companies donate to both major political parties its no wonder we are so far behind on renewables! I was brought up in an era where it was not polite to discuss politics, religion or money! So how do I find myself where I am today? It started with a kitchen table conversation and the realisation that I did not share the same values as the person or party that I had been voting for. Gradually it dawned on me that politics should not be a spectator sport, that if we want change we need to help create it.
I care about my community. I want society to work for the good of all, not just those with power and privilege. I felt proud of myself, the campaign and the voters of Mackellar when the seat was declared for Dr. Sophie Scamps on 22/5/22.
My career was as a TAFE teacher for over 30 years. I was inspired when I first heard Dr. Sophie Scamps speak about her policies on climate action, respect for women and integrity with authenticity and conviction. Dr. Scamps cares evidence- based decision making and listening to the community. No rhetoric or ideology shaping her views, just what is in the best interests of Mackellar. I volunteered in the campaign: doorknocking, street listening, banner waving. Now I volunteer in the electorate office, helping community organisations to have the tools necessary in obtaining grants.
You can be part of this community movement and make a difference.
I was inspired to volunteer for Dr Sophie Scamps after attending her initial campaign launch at Avalon beach.
I continue to be inspired to volunteer for her because I see how hard Dr Sophie consistently works on behalf of residents of the Mackellar electorate.
From a political perspective, it is truly refreshing to have a member of federal parliament who is not locked into the policies of any particular party but who is working for the constituents of her electorate and the values that are important to many.
This is just so historically unique as Dr Sophie is part of a broader independent political movement supported by the community and working for the community.
This why I do as much as possible as a volunteer for Dr Sophie because of the truly progressive and inspirational work she is doing on a daily basis.
Young people on the Northern Beaches offer a diverse range of skills and talents with serious potential to create positive change for our local and national community. By engaging with these voices in and outside an office setting, Dr Sophie and her team have demonstrated that they are excited to harness the contributions of young people to inform policy activity and advocate for a brighter future for young Australians.
I’m excited for what the future of an Independent Mackellar will look like and I am confident that Sophie’s office will continue to play a leading role in ensuring Canberra successfully upholds and protects the interests of young people
