Hi, I'm Sophie

I'm Dr Sophie Scamps. I've lived and worked on the Northern Beaches for 22 years.

After serving the community in the Emergency Department of Mona Vale Hospital and then practising as a GP in Narrabeen until November 2021, I decided to run for parliament as the Independent for Mackellar.

I am an Australian athletics record holder and became a gold medallist at the World Junior Championships in the 4x400m. While studying medicine at Sydney University, I continued my training and qualified for the 1992 Olympics. I am still involved in athletics as a volunteer race starter with Little Athletics in Narrabeen.

After I attained my medical degree, I gained a Masters with Honours at the College of Surgeons in Dublin, before my Oxford education where I gained a Masters of Science. I followed this with a Masters of Public Health from the University of NSW which I completed in 2010.

While I have some achievements to my name, there is none that I am more proud of than my three teenage children. My husband, who is a former rugby player with the Wallaby's squad, and I, love engaging in all the community activities the Northern Beaches has to offer.

In 2019 I founded Our Blue Dot, a community-led non-profit organisation aimed at empowering the local community to reduce our waste and emissions, successfully supporting the installation of solar panels on Avalon Surf Club.

I was a founding member of Voices of Mackellar in 2020, a non-partisan community organisation set up to engage people in their democracy.

In 2021, I founded Mackellar Rising with my friend Anyo Geddes with the express intention of building a movement to support an independent candidate for Mackellar.

Like many people in our community, I’ve become increasingly frustrated by the inaction of our politicians on important issues like climate change, integrity, small business support and health.

I’m stepping up to take our community’s concerns to Canberra, free from party politics and political factions. As an Independent MP, I can drive new ideas, generated from our own community. I can negotiate without getting bogged down in ideology, partisanship, or internal party battles.

I am proud to say I am now your community-backed independent and I pledge to take my skills, my determination, my ability to handle pressure and my love of the amazing Mackellar community to parliament.  I will bring a common sense approach and be a strong, community-led independent voice for Mackellar to reflect our shared values.
