A message to the community following the Bondi attack

2805_NEWSLETTER_Header.png (1819×559)

The horrific event in Bondi is a heartbreaking end to 2025.

The Australian Jewish community was targeted in a sickening act of antisemitic violence and hate on a day that should have been one of joy and hope. This is not the Australia we know, and it is not the Australia any of us will accept.

Our deepest condolences and love are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted and grieving, as well as the broader Jewish community. We are hoping and praying for the recovery of all those still in hospital.

Our first responders and community members showed enormous courage, putting their own lives at risk to save others, for which we are eternally grateful. In the midst of terror, the very best of humanity also shone through – including from our local Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert.

As Australians, we pride ourselves on fairness and tolerance. The Bondi tragedy is a stark reminder that we must act to protect these values. I welcome stronger laws to curb extremist speech and incitement to violence, measures to eradicate antisemitism and prejudice, and renewed efforts to tighten our gun laws.

While Australia’s reforms after Port Arthur were world-leading, gaps remain, such as inconsistent enforcement, the absence of a national gun register, and loopholes that allow individuals to accumulate multiple, high-powered firearms. Closing these gaps is an essential part of keeping our communities safe.

This heinous attack was intended to shatter our sense of safety, sow fear, and drive division, but we cannot allow hatred, suspicion, or the erosion of our shared humanity define our response. Now, more than ever, we must come together – to support one another, reaffirm our common values, build understanding and strengthen the bonds that hold our community together.

Support for Northern Beaches Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert

Northern Beaches Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert was one of the first police officers to respond to the Bondi attack.

Jack is just 22 years old and has only been in the police force for four months.

Even after being critically injured, he kept helping others, driven by his commitment to protect the community, even at great personal risk.

We thank Jack for his immense courage, professionalism and selflessness. Our community is incredibly proud of him.

Jack sustained two bullet wounds, one to his head and one to his shoulder. If you would like to support Jack in his recovery, please consider donating to the Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert Appeal or the GoFundMe fundraiser.
