SMH: Lifesavers and puppies – why are so many charities being used in political ads?

Surf Life Saving Australia has taken the extraordinary step of warning local clubs they face disciplinary action if they endorse political candidates, after Mackellar MP Jason Falinski posted campaign material alongside a local lifeguard in a Facebook video – the latest candidate to leverage the goodwill of charities ahead of the election.

The Australian beach institution, which is a not-for-profit organisation, issued a statement telling its members that the iconic red and yellow flags and lifesaver patrol uniforms – including their red and yellow skull quartered cap – are intellectual property trademarks.
